Activism March

SydWest walk to end violence against women

1 in 3 women will experience violence in their lifetime. On average, a woman in Australia is killed by a man they know every 10 days. Let’s create a future where we are all safe, equal, and respected.

SydWest, in partnership with Outer West Domestic Violence Network (OWDVN) and Blacktown City Council, is organising a walk next Wednesday as part of the UN Women’s initiative to end violence against women.

Come and join us at Blacktown’s Village Green at 10 am on November 29 and unite with activists around the world to take action to end gender-based violence. A key message of the campaign is that women and girls have the right to be Safe. Everywhere. Always.

Information stalls will be hosted after the walk, with bilingual SydWest and other community workers in attendance to talk to women and girls in a range of community languages.

People of all ages and genders are welcome and are invited to wear orange, the official colour of the campaign.

For more details, download our flyer here.

You may also like to view our multi-lingual video created with other organisations to remind women who have experienced violence from all backgrounds that they are not alone. The video features Filipino, Hindi, Punjabi, Arabic, Dari, Tamil, and Mandarin speaking members of the community.

If you are a woman from a culturally and linguistically diverse background and you need more information, contact us at info@sydwestms.org.au or call us at (02) 9621 6633.

Refugee Week 2023

SydWest Multicultural Services hosted a celebration of #RefugeeWeek: The Future of Settlement in Penrith to reaffirm Penrith City Council’s commitment towards being a refugee welcoming zone.

We also delivered community engagement events in our Mount Druitt and Blacktown offices for clients to share their stories, whilst also hosting activities that allowed them to bond through culture and fashion.

In partnership with SSI, we attended the launch of the Billion Dollar Benefit program in Canberra on World Refugee Day.

Unleashing refugee and migrant talent is good for newcomers, good for business, and good for Australia. It’s a win-win-win.

Australia’s leading refugee advocacy groups and support organisations SSI – Settlement Services International, Settlement Council of Australia, Community Corporate, and Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia – FECCA, recently launched ‘The Billion Dollar Benefit’, a report that outlines a roadmap for unleashing the economic potential of refugees and migrants.

It provides five barrier-breaking solutions recommended by 50 experts representing five sectors. By implementing these solutions by 2025, Australia can:

– Add billions to our economy

– Fill critical skills gaps

– Create sustainable employment pathways for newcomers

SydWest Multicultural Services wholeheartedly endorses the recommendations of this report and we are committed to taking action to enable refugees and migrants to reach their full career potential.

Social Impact summit no button

SydWest CEO Elfa Moraitakis to speak at Social Impact Summit

For the first time ever, this year’s Social Impact Summit brings together Government, corporate and not-for profit sectors in one setting to discuss what the implementation of the well-being budget announced by the Federal Government looks like.

As a nation, we will define what this truly means and evaluate the interdependency of social and economic outcomes when it comes to the wellbeing of our community.

From change makers, inspirational speakers, academics, researchers, practitioners, to leaders across the nation reviewing the importance of wellbeing – genuine discussions will take place to address the scope of practical work and implementation of policy, when it comes to dealing with social outcomes. This is one Social Impact Summit you don’t want to miss.

Our very own Elfa Moraitakis, CEO of SydWest Multicultural Services, a strong advocate for not-for-profit sector collaboration is one of the speakers of the Summit. Elfa genuinely believes that every organisation and sector can bring different strengths to help recognise the issues unfolding on the ground and identify early intervention measures for implementation to effect real change.

Whilst crisis and post-crisis management support is critical in addressing current challenges, focusing our efforts on early intervention will allow us as a nation, to better equip Australians be prepared for their future and well-being, rather than unravelling yesterday’s cumulative impacts today.

International Women's Day 2022

We are pleased to present our International Women’s Day event in 2022 with a spectacular lineup of strong, empowered women:

  • Amani Haydar, writer and artist and author of award-winning The Mother Wound
  • Rhiannon Wright, a proud Dharug woman who belongs to the Burubirangal people. She is the daughter of Leanne Mulgo Watson and the granddaughter of Dharug Elder Aunty Edna Watson.
  • Sarah Macdonald, ABC Radio Sydney presenter of Evenings and author of Holy Cow: an Indian adventure
  • Annalouise Paul an award-winning choreographer and performer and Flamenco Red with special guest musicians, Robert Varga and Byron Mark.
  • Subtle Mullets, a five-piece punk-rock band from Sydney’s inner west with lead vocals from Indigenous artist Jessie Waratah, bassist Hannah Cazar, drummer Miriam Sands, vocals/guitarist Adelaide Hayes and lead guitarist Evelyn Hayes.

Speaking to the theme #BreaktheBias this International Women’s Day, guest speaker Amani Haydar, addressed areas that pose as existing challenges today and how stereotypes can hinder quick recognition to prevent and overcome domestic violence. This also applies to stereotype profiling of victim survivors and perpetrators and how such bias operates against people – especially women from diverse backgrounds who do not have the resources to advocate effectively for themselves or receive adequate access to services.

SydWest Multicultural Services shared reviews of the National Draft Plan to end violence against women and children, advocating for consideration to culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Whether deliberate or unconscious, stereotypes that shape bias in and around us when it comes to gender equality, domestic violence, the profile of victim survivors hinders justice. Culturally appropriate services are important in protecting and supporting victim survivors of domestic violence – this International Women’s Day, we reflect upon how culture and religious context needs to be considered.
